Congratulations for the 5th Anniversary of YouTube Uploads
On February 14th 2005 three employees from PayPal registered a website with a simple premise, allow people to upload and share videos easily. This one idea grew into an internet phenomenom that in just one year, following the launch of the site, was sold for $1.65 billion to Google. The 3 founders of YouTube, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, were made instant millionaires overnight when they announced the sale of the site via a video uploaded on the 9th October 2006.
Today marks the 5th anniversary of the first video to be uploaded onto the site, effectively launching the site into the public realm. The simple 18 second clip of Jawed Karim called “Me at the Zoo” shows him describing the elephants at San Diego Zoo as having “really, really long um… trunks” kicked off one of the largest sites on the internet when it was uploaded at 8:27pm on 23rd April 2005. Admittedly it is not exactly an earth-shattering debut, but the impact on the internet has been huge, you can see the video below:
With over 24 hours of video footage uploaded every minute to the site, it is now impossible to watch everything that is hosted on the site, unless you have a spare 1,700 years to sit in front of your computer.
Everyone at Sixt wishes all the best to Youtube and their continuing success, long may you continue to occupy our time (outside of business hours, of course).
