Maldives government to hold underwater meeting
The government of the Maldives plan to hold a cabinet meeting underwater in an attempt to highlight the threat of global warming.
President Mohamed Nasheed and his cabinet will sign a document calling for global cuts in carbon emissions during a dive on the 17th of October.
The Maldives faces a serious threat from rising sea levels and could face being completely wiped out if polar icebergs melt as a result of global warming, with 80% of the Maldives infrastructure lying less than one meter above sea level.
The meeting, which is being described as a ‘bit of fun with a serious message’, will be conducted using hand signals and waterproof boards and pens.
Instructors and members of the military will join members of the cabinet who have been in training for the dive at a military base.
Mr Nasheed, who is already a qualified diver, will also hold a press conference under the water warning that the entire nation may have to find a new home if the oceans rise as predicted by the UN.
The diving party should not face any threat from the local wildlife with local sharks being described as ‘friendly’.
