Even Boris’ Bikes Need Van Rental
London’s latest bike hire scheme has been running into a few issues since the launch, but the latest problem is due to the demand created for the bikes. There is simply not enough room at the docking stations at mainline stations for customers to put the bikes, leaving some commuters with the option of dumping the bikes near to the docking bays or taking the bikes home. The problem seems to related to difficulties distributing the bikes to the busiest docking stations.
Initially Serco, the company in charge with the distributing excess bikes to empty stations, had planned to use 10 electric low emission “green” vehicles to ferry the bikes across London. However, because of several problems with planning permissions for the stations and the recent tube strikes Serco have had to bring in vans rented within London to increase the speed of bike distribution.
The inclusion of rental vans to the distribution network has doubled the amount of vehicles able to drop the bikes to the numerous locations throughout the city and is expected to start relieving the pressure currently mounting on the scheme.
