SIXT Waives Cancellation Fees for Potential BAA Strike

It’s been a fairly tough year for visitors to the UK, snow brought the country to a grinding halt in January, flights across Europe grounded because of volcanic ash and British Airways staff striking through the summer months. However the latest news is that staff from BAA, the British Airports Authority, have voted to strike regarding a pay dispute with the owners of BAA, Ferrovial. At the moment there has been no news as to when the strike will take place, but it is suspected that the upcoming bank holiday would be the time for the strike to cause maximum disruption.

The Unite union rejected a 1% pay offer from the airport operator saying it was “nothing short of confrontational” and following a ballot from its members has advised them to strike. The ballot was won by a majority of 3 to 1 with large numbers of essential staff including firefighters and security officers voted to strike. With the staff, who are critical to the smooth running of the airport, voting to strike BAA has stated that they will be forced to shut down their operations, which include Heathrow Airport, Stansted Airport and Edinburgh Airport.

In light of these events SIXT have decided to waive cancellation fees on pre-paid rentals, for any customer booking directly with SIXT who may be affected by the strike. We’ve grown tired of events and circumstances affecting travellers who choose to book a hire car with SIXT and are not wanting to punish customers for circumstances that are out of their control.
