Trial without jury expands into losing defendants
In an interesting update to our story on the start of the first trial without a jury in England and Wales for 350 years, one of the accused has escaped and is currently on the run. Peter Blake, 57, disappeared from the Royal Courts of Justice on Wednesday afternoon after leaving to consult with his lawyers. Mr Blake had attended the early morning session of the trial but after being given permission to discuss the case further with his legal team he failed to return to the court in the afternoon.
A warrant for Mr Blake’s arrest was immediately issued by the trial judge, who had been granted bail in 2007 and the Metropolitan Police are now searching for the fugitive. A spokesperson for the Police stated “Peter Blake is considered dangerous and we would ask members of the public not to approach him, but if they do see him to call 999 immediately. He may still be in the UK and someone will know where he is. We are doing everything we can to find him.”.
Mr Blake is described as 5 foot 7 with blue eyes, receding grey and was wearing a black raincoat and dark trousers.
