Wheel Clampers to be Banned in the UK
Great news for drivers throughout the United Kingdom yesterday as the government confirmed that companies clamping and towing away vehicles on private land are to banned from operating. The new legislation, part of the government’s Freedom Bill, is set to be introduced in November.
The news has understandably been welcomed by the large majority of people, including many motoring groups, but parking firms are saying that regulation as opposed to an outright ban is a better solution. The Equalities and Criminal Information Minister, Lynne Featherstone MP, said that the coalition government was “committed to ending the menace of rogue private sector wheel-clampers once and for all”.
This week has seen several news reports of problem clampers with a nurse being clamped whilst visiting a patient and being asked to pay a release fee of £350 with an additional £50 per hour being added to the total if payment was delayed. Last week another driver, Haroon Zafayrab, staged a 30 hour sit in after returning to find his car clamped after he’d attended a prayer session for Ramadan in Wembley. During the protest an additional 40 tickets, adding up to a total fine of £3,565, were added and all of the wheels on his car ended up clamped.
