One of London’s most-loved museums is set to welcome back a lost treasure after being given a helping hand from the Art Fund.

The Sir John Soane’s Museum, which is just a short walk from the better-known British Museum, is home to hundreds of fascinating artefacts acquired by the famous architect.

These include Roman and Greek statues, coins and paintings by some of the world’s most-celebrated artists.

However, only now is what has been called Sir John’s most-prized possession due to go back on display.

A solid gold ‘mourning ring’, which contained a lock of Napoleon’s hair, was snapped up at auction by the Art Fund, which has now returned it to the museum, where it will go on public display within the next couple of weeks.

Announcing the news,Tim Knox, Director of Sir John Soane’s Museum, said: “Soane had a horrible fascination with Napoleon and this ring, with its plait of the vanquished Emperor’s hair, was the ultimate trophy. We are thrilled to get it back to its old home.”

The museum hosts special candle-lit openings on the first Tuesday of each month, with these frequently proving a massive hit among history-lovers.
