Sheffield Mencap Christmas Fair & Charity GigWho are Sheffield Mencap?
I am sure most people have heard of the organisation Mencap, but do you know what they actually do and how they help your local community? Did you know for instance that it is a local charity which has to provide its own funding?

Sheffield Mencap develops and provides support activities and services for individuals with learning disabilities.  Working together with these individuals and their families, the organisation offers a platform for individuals to build their confidence and skills, with the aim to improve the quality of life for all with a learning disability.

Their services are available to any individual in Sheffield with a learning disability and their families, as it is not just the individual themselves that often needs support.

Why should you help raise funds?

Mencap may be a well known organisation, but it still needs support and help from the local Sheffield Mencap Christmas Fair & Charity Gigcommunity to raise funds and provide the vital volunteers that help to keep many activities running. Sheffield Mencap is affiliated to the national charity Mencap, but receives no funding from them.  Sheffield City Council, the Carers Fund and Rotherham College of Arts & Technology all provide funding for many vital services and projects, but the rest has to be made up from charitable funding.

What events are next on the calendar?

There are 2 up and coming fundraising events taking place, with all proceeds going directly back into Mencap Sheffield. Why not come along?

Christmas Fair

On Saturday 28 November the Christmas Fair is taking place at Norfolk Lodge in Sheffield.  From 12.00 – 3.00pm Norfolk Lodge will be a hive of activity with plenty of stalls to browse selling sweets, cakes, bric-a-brac, books, DVDs and toys.  Of course, there is the opportunity to win some brilliant prizes in the Mencap raffle and who could forget the all important visit of Father Christmas! So, before you head out to the football or hit Meadowhall for Christmas shopping, why not take an hour out and visit the Christmas Fair.

West Street Live Charity Gig

Sheffield Mencap Christmas Fair & Charity GigThis is always a popular event for not only supporters of Mencap, but also fans of local music and bands. For those of you that follow Sheffield live music you will already know that West Street Live is a great venue and they have always been fantastic supporters of local charities. For one night only local bands will leave their own song-writing skills at home and entertain all with pop tunes so cheesy, you’ll think  you are back at the school disco – embarrassing dance moves are optional but will be photograph for future advertising!
Doors open at 5pm with 8 bands playing until approximately 11pm and it should be a brilliant night.  Entry is just £5 which can be paid on the door and ALL proceeds (not one penny is being taken out for ‘administration’ fees etc) are being split between Mencapand Red Tape music studios, who promote music to people with learning disabilities.

Sheffield Mencap Christmas Fair & Charity GigYou may not be able to stop for the whole 6 hours, but why not take a stroll after your Sunday roast and see what’s happening.
