Car hire users given night driving tips
An insurance company has urged motorists, such as car hire in London users, to take action to protect themselves against the chances of an accident when driving in the dark.
Users of London car hire have been warned about the spike in accidents that accompanies the change from British Summer Time to Greenwich Mean Time.
Zurich Connect has said that on average there is an 11 per cent rise in car insurance claims in the fortnight after the clocks go back.
Mike Quinton of the insurance firm said that daylight saving is a “dark week” for car hire users.
He said: “It’s possible that drivers get used to driving their regular routes in broad daylight, then find it hard to adjust to suddenly doing the same journey at the same time, but in the dark. Couple this with the fact that autumnal weather is often wet and windy, and the risk of having an accident on the road is significantly increased.”
The company said that motorists can safeguard themselves by keeping their lights and windows clear and clean, taking regular breaks and keeping at least a four-second gap between themselves and the vehicle in front.
Zurich Connect’s report comes shortly after insurance company RIAS urged motorists to take action to protect themselves against accidents while driving in the dark.
