Millions of Brits are afraid of driving in the dark, a new study has found.

Research by Saga Motor Insurance revealed that five million people are concerned about making car trips at night.

The study showed that 20 per cent of Brits, such as users of London car hire, drive less through the winter in order to avoid making journeys in the dark.

Meanwhile, this was the case for 31 per cent of the over-70s, with 55 per cent of participants saying they would go out less in the evening so they do not have to drive in the dark.

Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of the Saga Group, said that driving in the dark is “clearly a worry” for many people.

However he suggested that older car hire users may take action to safeguard themselves at night.

Mr Goodsell commented: “Our research shows the over-50s use their experience to adapt their driving to reflect conditions on the road and as you would expect have fewer accidents than other age groups.”

Recently, insurance group RIAS warned motorists about driving in the dark, saying that 40 per cent of accidents happen at night.
