A Speed Camera: birds not included with this model
Drivers who used to hurtle through the village of Newbottle, near Sunderland, have started to slow down and pay attention to the speed limit thanks to an ingenious former police officer and a new bird box that he has put up. The box, which looks like a speed camera, is constructed from plywood with lenses and metallic strips on the outside and has been placed on a pole at the bottom of retired detective Bill Angus’ lawn and is causing drivers to slow down and drive through the village at a more measured pace.
When asked about the bright yellow box Mr Angus insisted, with a hint of humour, that “It’s a bird box and has been designed this way to stop people stealing it. It’s painted a bright colour to attract the blue tits and finches.”
Local residents have been campaigning to get traffic calming measures introduced to Newbottle but it is not considered to be a priority site at the moment, although the introduction of the bird box has certainly reduced the average speed of cars through the village.
