carsatnav Driver almost loses job after satnav errorUsers of car hire in Birmingham may want to avoid relying solely on satnavs after a West Midlands Ambulance driver got into trouble for doing so.

Avtar Suniara, who works for Birmingham City Hospital, almost lost his job after being stopped by police driving the wrong way up a one-way road in his own car in July.

Mr Suniara was stopped by the police while being directed by his satnav through Coventry as he searched for a shop with his friend.

This led to the authorities threatening to have the car towed after a DVLA mix-up meant that his details did not show on their database.

Mr Suniara revealed that he was misled by vandalised road signs and his satnav.

He said: “It was the first time I had ever been to that area and the road signs had been vandalised and were taped up, so I had no idea it was one-way and was just following the satnav directions.”

Despite being originally told he faced nine points on his licence, Mr Suniara sought legal advice which left him ultimately hit with three points, which allowed him to keep his job.

Another motorist users of car hire may want to avoid following the example of is David Beckham, after he was spotted using a mobile while driving.
