Ford Reveals Future Plans at CES
At last week’s Consumer Electronics Show, Ford CEO Alan Mulally showed off the latest advancements in their Sync technology including improved voice recognition and the ability to update Twitter and recieve tweets from people you are following.
The Sync in-car communications and entertainment system is a factory installed extra and initially was able to be installed on only 12 models in their 2008 range in the United States although the install base is expanding with every year. The system can sync with numerous mobile devices, including Bluetooth enabled phones and media players, allowing the driver to control them using voice commands whilst keeping their focus firmly on the road. The other key features of Sync are audible text messages, traffic alerts, turn-by-turn directions, news updates, 911 Assist (which contacts the police in the even of your air bag deploying or the vehicle being involved in an accident) and vehicle health reports.
Ford developed the system with Microsoft in 2007 before releasing the system to much acclaim throughout the technology world including winning a “Best of What’s New Award” in the November 2007 edition of Popular Science magazine. Ford is now looking at expanding its partnerships by trying to incorporate some of Google’s technology into the system.
The car manufacturer is now looking to expand the amount of technology within their vehicles including introducing the MyFord touch system that they previewed at CES. The system includes an 8″ touch screen mounted between the driver and passenger and is operated via touch commands as well as being integrated with the Sync system.
Hopefully Ford will start to include this technology for the European market, but at the moment there is limited information as to when or where it will be introduced.
