Many London car hire users may be unable to identify standard road signs, a new study has suggested.

Research by moneysupermarket.com found only three per cent of the motorists polled knew all five of the signs they were shown.

Of these, 65 per cent did not recognise the marking for no vehicles, while only 38 per cent correctly identified the sign for a minimum speed limit.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance for moneysupermarket.com, said: “It is worrying to see so many British motorists ‘crash and burn’ when tested on standard Highway Code rules. Motorists are required by law to be able to recognise and adhere to the rules of the Highway Code.”

He added that those failing to obey these signs will face a fine and possibly points on their licence.

The Highway Code is the UK’s official road safety manual and currently contains more than 300 rules.he cultural factor of knowing that motorists, such as car hire users, were being monitored by the black box.
