Earlier this year Schumacher nearly returned to the Ferrari team to be a replacement driver after a freak accident during qualifying for this year’s Hungarian Grand Prix left Ferrari’s Felipe Massa with a fractured skull after a spring broke loose from fellow Brazilian Rubens Barrichello’s car. The spring bounced up along the main straight hitting Massa on the helmet, narrowly missing the driver’s visor, at approximately 170 mph. Massa lost consciousness and crashed into a tyre wall. He has spent the remaining time this season recovering from his injuries and will be returning to join new Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso on the starting grid in Bahrain in March.
Schumacher, 41, unfortunately had to pull out of his return to Ferrari earlier this year after a long standing neck injury from a motorbiking accident, but now looks to have put that behind him as he prepares to start a new season with the Mercedes team. Many people are welcoming the move and are hoping that Schumacher will be challenging the other drivers and showing them that his skills are still as sharp as the day he left in 2004. He will partner fellow German Nico Rosberg who left the Williams at the end of the 2009 season.
