50 Years of Notting Hill Carnival!
We are particularly thrilled for this year’s Notting Hill carnival to take to the streets of West London for its fiftieth year, celebrating West Indian culture in all of its diversity. Originating as a small and predominantly Trinidadian festival, the even was set up in response to the race riots of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. Since then the event has grown into a two-day spectacle where the numbers of attendees swell up to 2 million, making it the largest street festival in Europe.
With over 40 different static sound systems, ten steel pan bands and 70 performing stages there is never a quiet moment along the 3.5 mile long parade route. Sunday is traditionally known as ‘Family Day’ and has a more laid-back feel to it than the slightly more raucous Monday.
Strathaven: International Balloon Festival
Get ready to be amazed as this weekend Scotland‘s International Hot Air Balloon Spectacular prepares to kick off at Strathaven’s John Hastie park. With a huge range of different hot air balloons preparing to take off into the sky, alongside classic vehicle shows and much more, the event promises fun for all the family. Be sure not to miss the mesmerising ‘Evening Glow’ event on the Saturday evening, where the teams light the burners of their tethered balloons to illuminate their colourful envelopes against the night sky.
The North Sea Tall Ships Regatta
This year over 30 of the world’s most impressive Tall Ships will be sailing into Blyth, Northumberland, to participate in this historic regatta. Across the weekend there will be fireworks, music and parades, with the event closing with a race from the Northumberland coastline to Gothenburg in Sweden. Admission is completely free of charge, and this year will be marking the 60th anniversary of the first Tall Ship race between Torquay and Lisbon.
