Frieze Art Fair taking place next week in London

If you are taking a trip to London next week or live in the area, be sure to visit Frieze Art fair, which takes place in Regents park between the 13th-16th October. The Annual art event, showcases over 170 of the most exciting contemporary art galleries in the world. The fair also includes specially commissioned artists’s projects, a prestigous talks programme, Musical performances, Films and an artist-led education schedule. An outdoor sculpture park exhibits work from both old and new designers. The sculpture park is free to the public.

This fair is suitable for people of all ages, and has a lot of activites catered for families,In the Octopus’s Garden those aged 9-99 are encouraged to take part in four fun activities in which Pierre Huyghe’s Frieze Project will inspire new ideas for thinking about and making art. During the reign of the Tudors, Shakespeare wrote his infamous plays which were performed at the infamous Globe theatre and today you can visit a reconstruction of the building on the London Thames bank and see performances of his famous plays. It was also known for King Henry the VIII, the King with six wives. This was an era when cooking was used to show wealth and status, and a time of change when more exotic foods were imported from overseas. Food was used for visual effects, when tudor food was prepared for nobility and royalty, large banquets and feasts were preapred. London opens Westfield Stratford, the Largest shopping mall in Europe

Planning ahead for upcoming 2012 Olympics, Westfield Stratford City shopping centre, the quite extraordinarily large, 1.9 million square feet, the biggest urban shopping centre in Europe, opened last week on the edge of the Olympic site, situated in east London.

The shopping centre is proud to state it produces 10,000 jobs and is the gateway to the Olympic site, a place for tourists to go in between games. It seems already a hit with the locals, experiencing 200,000 shoppers in the first week, spending over £20 million. In fact, so many visitors tried to get in at the 3pm opening, many had to queue for hours as the building became over copacity.

Westfield holds over 220 stores, from high street brands such as Topshop and Miss Selfridge to boutiques, Make up stores, home furnishing and fashion labels such as Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss. There is also over 23 Restaurants, 14 Cafes and plenty of fast food eateries for you to choose from. If you fancy some light entertainment, Vue in Westfield holds London’s largest all digital 17 screen cinema and a large 10 pin bowling alley. Brilliant for a day out, I know I will definately be paying a visit very soon!

We currently have a fleet responsible opening based in London, to Support the network, maximise utilisation and reduce downtime on vehicles.

Daily Routine Includes:

Daily monitoring of Fleet requirements ( Cobra Prisom )
Allocate all Off the road vehicles to relevant repairer
Chase repairers daily for progress on off the road vehicles
Daily Check on suppliers are performing within SLA’s
Ensure all vehicles are repaired to manufacturer conditions ( poor repairs )
Prepare fleet reports bi weekly for responsible branches
Ensure all vehicles are defleeted within manufacturer conditions ( Age mileage )
Coordinate with Fleet manager all in fleet requirements for Area
Ensure all defleet vehicles are up to return standards prior to transport to Defleet
Prepare daily Off road report for respective Area
Monitor and action all special vehicle requirements ( Minibus / 9 Seaters)
Coordinate Movements with other Regions
Ensure that Branches are following the Rentable standard guides
Ensure NO parts are taken out of vehicles
Implement system so that Branches achieve 120% fuel recharge ratio
Ensure Car Check process is being used in all Branches

Measurements

Ensure daily off the road is below 2.5% of total fleet
To reduce Days off the grid to within 5 days

My time in the UK for Sixt rent a car

In this post I would like to describe my 5 weeks internship time for Sixt in the UK. First of all, a short introduction about myself. My name is Martin and I’m a university student from Germany and as part of my degree studies I am working for Sixt every term between my semesters. Usually I work in the German Headquarters in Munich, but this term I took the chance to work abroad and I decided to go to the United Kingdom, to be exact to the Sixt UK head office in Chesterfield.

I have never been to the United Kingdom before, so I did not know much about the country but that changed during my stay in Chesterfield and I am really starting to love the UK. Anyhow, on my first day I had two shocking experiences: first, the temperature change. Whilst the temperature in Munich was about 25 degrees, I arrived on a rainy and much colder day at Manchester airport. At the airport I hired a car from the local Sixt rent a car branch to drive to Chesterfield. And driving on the left side was a very tough challenge! I felt tense and had to frequently change the way I normally would look from the left to the right side and vice versa to ensure I didn’t drive too close to the edge of the street. Nevertheless, I arrived healthy in Chesterfield and as from now on I decided to use the buses and trains to make my way around the UK.

The next day was my first working day and I joined the Online Marketing Team where I learned a lot about online marketing, search engine optimisation and data analysis during my stay. After work I went with my colleagues for dinner and had my first Roast Beef with Yorkshire Pudding which I really enjoyed. Incidentally I really prefer the English food. I will miss all the Yorkshire Puddings, Chips & Fish and amounts of sandwiches and burgers when I return to Germany.

I travelled a lot around the North of England and visited cities and places in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, York, Nottingham, Sheffield and the lovely Peak District National Park. The weekend I spent in Manchester was especially good because it was the day of the Champions League final between Manchester and Barcelona and the atmosphere in the pub was impressive and reached its peak after Rooney scored the equaliser. Unfortunately, the atmosphere declined in the second half…

Regrettably, this is my last week in the UK and I have to go back to Germany afterwards, but not before going to London to visit the capital city with its touristic highlights. Altogether I can look back on a very interesting time with a lot of positive experiences and friendships and I’m sure I will come back to the UK sometime in the future as there are still a lot of nice places I did not have the time to visit.

Disruption in London This Weekend

London residents and tourists alike are being warned to avoid Central London or take alternative routes, wherever possible, on Saturday the 26^th March as the TUC (Trade Unions Congress) will be staging their March For The Alternative.

The TUC’s March for the Alternative has two key aims, to give a national voice to all those affected by the cuts and to show that people reject the argument that there is no alternative.

There are plans for this to be a huge event, potentially up to 250,000 people, that will show just how much opposition there is to the government’s current programme. It is expected to bring together public service workers, those who depend on public services, those involved in national campaigns and those wishing to defend what is special in their own community. Further information on the march itself can be found on the March For The Alternative website.

The rally will begin to form at the Victoria embankment from 1100hrs this Saturday and the march is scheduled to start at 1200hrs. The march will go through key locations such as Whitehall, Trafalgar Square and Pall Mall in the following six hours with the event planned to end at 1800hrs at South Carriage Drive in Hyde Park.

The Metropolitan Police are warning that all roads on the route, plus all feeder roads and surrounding roads, may be closed if necessary to relieve congestion. Further information and maps of the road closures can be found online.

The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race

Saturday 26 March 2011 sees one of England’s oldest sporting traditions take place on the River Thames, London. The 157th Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, now also know as The Xchanging Boat Race, will be shown live on BBC One from 1545 GMT with the big race starting at 1700 GMT.

The Boat Race has come a long way since its beginnings in 1829.It is now a major sporting occasion with up to 250,000 spectators watching the race from the banks of the river Thames and fans tuning in to watch the action worldwide. The exact route of the race and the best places to watch along the course are available online.

So how did this tradition begin and where did the rivalry between the two universities stem from? On 12 March 1829 two friends, Charles Merivale of Cambridge and Charles Wordsworth of Oxford thought of the idea of the challenge of a boat, the challenge was accepted by Oxford and the rest they say, is history. The race continues year after year as the loser of the previous year’s race challenges the opposition to a re-match and so it continues.

The race today is fiercely competitive and with Cambridge (the Light Blues) coming from behind to win the 2010 race, Oxford (the Dark Blues) will be looking to improve on their record of 75 wins to Cambridge’s 80 by clinching a win.

The crew have been announced and whatever the outcome, this year’s race will be memorable for 2 reasons. On the 30th anniversary of the first woman to cox a Boat Race, Liz Box will have the honour of coxing Cambridge and aged just 18 years and nine months, the Oxford cox Sam Winter-Levy will be the youngest cox for over 100 years. So whoever wins, it’s those 2 facts that you will need to remember for the next pub quiz!
