A new study performed by Co-op travel has discovered that the average price of a holiday at half term this year is considerably cheaper than this time last year. Savings of up to 33% can be found depending on the destination that you go to, with Bodrum topping the list and the Costa Del Sol following closely behind for the best deals.

Ryanair to Move Away from Cheap Fares?

Ryanair CEO, Michael O’Leary, has admitted that the budget carrier’s current “pile it high and sell it low” approach, could be coming to a close. The no-frills airline has built its reputation on providing the lowest cost flights available, however O’Leary has stated that their current average fare of £33 will become unsustainable in the future as Ryanair expand. Currently the airline generally flies to and from quite a few airports that Sixt are located at such as Stansted, Malaga and Faro, but if future plans go ahead their presence could be expanded even further.

Ryanair has expanded over the 16 years that O’Leary has been in control from being a small regional carrier into Europe’s largest short haul airline with 250 aeroplanes carrying in excess of 70 million passengers a year. If they do choose to expand to other airports in Europe the increase in costs will have be passed on to the customers.

He went on to say that this will need to be twinned with a new approach for their business operations as the company becomes more mature within the market and will have to start introducing new aspects to the business other than offering the cheapest fares available. He intends the move to mirror that of supermarkets such as Tesco and Lidl who have improved their overall image from being relatively cheap, budget supermarkets to the market leaders that they are today.

50% Discount for Malaga Passengers Affected by Flight Cancellations

As flights to and from the UK are grounded Sixt customers currently affected by the cancellations at Malaga Airport are being offered a 50% discount on continuing their booking if they present a valid ticket for a cancelled flight at their Sixt Malaga Car Hire Branch.

The ash cloud created by the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland is currently affecting flights across Northern Europe and Scandinavia. The cloud is set to clear the area later this evening, but until conditions are considered to be safe, airlines are advising all customers to check before arriving at airports to check the current situation before getting to the airport.

Update 13:42: UK Airspace is now closed until 6:00 am on the 16th of April. Please contact your airline for further details.

Update 17:02: Closure of airspace extended until 7:00am.

Update 08:50: The latest update from the National Air Traffic Services who are now saying that the UK’s airspace will remain closed until 1:00am at the earliest, although some domestic flights may be allowed into Scotland and Northern Ireland if the air clears by 7:00pm tonight.

Update 15:02: The Airspace closure has been extended until 07:00 on Saturday.

As you pass through the wrought Iron gate called ‘Valdevaqueros’ the road twists and turns its way into another world; the world of the Surfer. Tarifa is a hot spot for kite surfers in particular, with some enthusiasts considering it to be the best destination in Europe for the sport.

At the end of the twists and turns of the meandering road you’ll see sand dunes and a small parking area. In a secluded area, sheltered away from the wind, is the main car park where the vehicles are well protected from all the sand blowing in the air.

Tarifa became the European ‘surfer capital’ due to two winds which meet here, the levante and the poniente, keeping conditions ideal almost throughout the year. Speaking just a few words of a local language can help Britons enjoy a more fruitful holiday, it has been claimed

Learning even just a few words of a local language can help travellers escape the well-worn tourist trail and enjoy a ‘more authentic travel experience’.

That is according to one expert commenting on the news that around six in ten Britons refuse to attempt to learn a foreign language before going overseas.

According to the research carried out by TravelSupermarket.com, 12 per cent of Britons feel there is ‘no point’ in making an effort to learn some common phrases, largely as they believe everybody speaks English.

However, Vanessa Lenssen, founder and chief executive of GoLearnTo.com has explained that a little effort in this department can bring significant rewards.

“You’ll meet new people and discover things that a tourist just wouldn’t be able to without trying to communicate with the locals,” she said.

This advice comes soon after the Department for Children, Schools and Families teamed up with Channel 4 to launch a campaign aimed at encouraging school pupils to choose a modern language at GCSE level.
