Semana Santa – Easter on Majorca

Finding the Easter bunny on the island is slightly more difficult than in other countries. In spite of the fact that the supermarkets are bursting with chocolate eggs and bunnies, this tradition is still considered to be imported.

The Easter processions in Spain are renowned for their impressiveness. The largest and most important procession of “Semana Santa” (Easter Week), the Processó del Sant Crist de la Sang, takes place in the capital Palma de Majorca on Holy Thursday with the participation of 50 brotherhoods, the right of membership to which is passed down from father to son, something of which they are extremely proud.

The traditional attire, consisting of robes and with pointed hoods in the colour of the brotherhood hence preserving the anonymous status of the penitents, the drumbeat, the rattling of the chains and the moaning of the women confers this rather singular event with a somewhat mystic ambience. The procession starts in the late afternoon and lasts into the early hours of the morning. The days following Easter Thursday are packed with a programme of religious events. On Good Friday there are a lot of other processions throughout the entire island and Holy Sunday is, of course, famous for its masses. Easter Monday is a family day on which villagers dine in traditional restaurants or go on picnics.

The “Romerías” or pilgrimages are typical of this time of the year and take place on Tuesday with the participation of the entire village. Finally, on the Easter Sunday there is a large fair at Bellver Castle in Palma. Well worth a mention is the typical food made at Easter; Empanades pies filled with meat, fish and vegetables, pine nuts and raisins, Rubiols filled with jam or curd cheese, Crespells, a kind of biscuit, to name but a few. The only thing that is vaguely reminiscent of other European traditions are the chocolate figures, called Mona de Pascua, which according to a Catalan custom are traditionally given by godparents to their godchildren.

As you can see, holidays on Majorca are not just sea and sand! Let yourself be seduced by the charm of “Semana Santa” and the typical mallorquin products.

Air Strike Chaos set to hit Spain and Belgium

Travellers flying to or from Spain and Belgium are facing trouble this week as workers from both countries are set to stage walk outs or are in the process of walking out. Statements issued by both Ryanair and Easyjet are warning passengers to check the status of their flights before setting off on their journeys.

Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) in Belgium walked out earlier today leaving large numbers of passengers facing cancelled flights and having to seek out accommodation or alternatives for travelling during the 24 hour strike period. It is currently unclear as to what has prompted the strike action, which occurred without warning and has left airlines struggling to warn passengers and rectify the current situation.

Spanish workers are set to hold a general strike starting at midnight and will affect many flights throughout the 24 hour period, although the airlines cannot offer complete news of which flights are cancelled or running at a limited capacity. It is thought that the majority of flights will be able to reach destinations in Spain, but the strike will affect other infrastructures vital to maintaining a full service to airlines.

Ryanair have stated that they can only accept hand luggage onto Spanish flights during this period, because the third-party baggage handler that the company uses in Spain is likely to take part in the strike action.

Several of our branches, including Malaga Airport and Barcelona Airport have been warned of the situation and will be on hand to help our customers rearrange rentals if required. Sun 4 U Direct enter administration

As of 21:00 hours on Wednesday the 11th of August Sun 4 U Limited has ceased trading leaving many holidaymakers stranded whilst alternative arrangements are sought. Amongst those affected are 1200 travellers stranded in Spain.

Anyone covered by the ATOL scheme, which is run by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), will be able to finish their holiday and return home. However it could be the case that they will still need to pay for their hotel twice.

Sun 4 U also arranged flight and accommodation only deals that are not covered by ATOL.

Customers stuck overseas on a Sun4u holiday package should call 0161 444 5810 for more information.

Sun4u package holiday customers who are due to travel and need advice should call 08445 717260.

Any Sun 4 U customers renting with Sixt should contact the local branch from which they hired if they need to extend their rental.

A day at the races in Mijas

The summer race season has started in the Costa del Sol Hippodrome in Mijas. The first race took place on the 3rd of July and there is a whole month to follow if you missed the first one!

The Costa del Sol Hippodrome is located in “Mijas Costa“, Málaga, and was inaugurated in the year 2000. It is the biggest hippodrome in Andalucia, alongside with the one in Dos Hermanas, Seville, boasting two sand tracks that measure 1700 and 1600 meters long and 25 meters wide each. Facilities include 320 boxes for racing horses and two jumping tracks. The hippodrome also offers an athletics track and a football field situated in the centre of the equestrian ring and the stands have capacity for up to 1500 people.

If you´re looking for a day at the races then you are still in time, the next races will take place on July the 10th, 17th, 24th and 30th.
