Stansted Airport has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard Accreditation, following its introduction and successful undertaking of various energy-saving initiatives. Stansted Airport’s green efforts have resulted in a reduction of carbon emissions by almost 2% between January 2007 and December 2009.

The airport successfully cut its carbon footprint in several ways, such as urging staff to switch off all electrical items (where practical) instead of leaving them in standby mode, and installing sensor lighting in office areas that can detect when someone enters the room and can automatically turn the lights off when everyone has left. The installation of low energy lighting on the airfield also manages to save a massive amount of energy throughout the year.

Motion sensors on travelators and escalators allow for them to be run only when required, rather than being switched on all the time.

Other ways in which the airport has managed to cut carbon emissions is by having taxiing planes use just one engine while on the ground, and the installation of biomass technology when extending the terminal. This allowed construction work to be carried out in a carbon-neutral fashion.

Posters advertising the Stansted Express have been banned from the airport following a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The posters currently display the text “Train to London 35 minutes” alongside images of famous tourist spots in London with the intention of informing travellers that aren’t fluent in English in a simple, easy to understand way.

Under closer inspection, following a complaint, the ASA discovered that the actual travel time to central London was closer to 45 minutes and ruled that the poster was likely to mislead passengers. They went on to say that “We understood that many travellers would not necessarily speak English and that the use of tourist landmarks was intended to communicate a simple message. However, we considered that the simplicity of the message could potentially confuse visitors about where in the city they would get to in 35 minutes.”

National Express, who are in charge of the train service, say that over 50% of the train’s business is generated from international passengers many of whom do not fully understand fluent English. The usage of simple images of a train, the time and famous landmarks was intended to convey the message in a simple and concise manner.

The ads are now currently in the process of being changed.

A simpler way of avoiding confusion with the trains or the express service would be to jump in a vehicle provided by Sixt Rent a Car from our Stansted Airport branch

A new pay offer from BAA has put the strikes planned for 6 UK airports later this month on hold. Members of the Unite union last week voted to go on strike over a proposed pay increase of up to 1.5%, following last year’s pay freeze. However, after negotiations held late into last night an agreement has been reached and the new offer will be put to a ballot, with the results set to be known within the next 3 weeks.

The proposed strike had threatened to close down airports including Heathrow, Stansted and Edinburgh over the bank holiday weekend after fire crew and other ground staff voted to reject the initial pay offer from BAA. Although no details of the new deal have been released yet, the Unite union is confident that any further strikes can be avoided and it urged it’s members to accept the new terms.

At Sixt we pride ourselves in taking extra measures to ensure our customers have a pleasant and relaxed experience when renting with us. Service quality and a strong service mentality are core values for all members of Sixt staff across the entire company.

An example of the extra steps Sixt staff are willing to take was highlighted in a recent case experienced by Mr De Graaf, a customer at our Stansted Airport branch. After returning his hire car Mr De Graaf realised he had left his GPS system in the vehicle but as he was already en route back to the US it was too late to go back to the location. However there was no need to worry as the GPS was soon back with him thanks to Anja Nowak, from the Sixt Stansted team, who personally arranged for the item to be returned using the best value delivery service.

Below are some extracts from Mr De Graaf’s kind letter acknowledging Anja’s exemplary service.

I want you to know you have an exceptional employee at your office at Stansted Airport, UK – Anja Nowak. She performed an act of such unusual honesty and kindness that I think you should know.

On May 10 I returned my Sixt rental car at Stansted airport. Boarding my Ryanair flight to Perugia, Italy I rummaged through my carryon but could not find my trusty old Garmin GPSMap76 that I’d intended to use to monitor the flight’s Progress. A thorough search after arrival showed it was indeed gone. I deduced I had left it behind so with little hope I phoned and emailed the Sixt office in Stansted and the hotel.

Ms. Nowak answered the phone, didn’t know about any found GPS, but agreed to mount a search. Shortly, I received an email – it had been found. Ms. Nowak offered to personally wrap and arrange delivery of the GPS and to add the cost to my car rental credit card bill. I was amazed and pleased.

Today, it arrived, beautifully and efficiently packaged and in perfect condition to my home in North Carolina. With people like Anja Nowak as employees, you are blessed.

After this experience, my next car rental surely will be from Sixt, if at all possible.

It’s always nice to receive positive feedback from our highly valued customers so we’d like to thank Mr De Graaf for taking the time to write to us and congratulate Ms. Nowak for being a commendable Sixt employee.

The potential sale of two of London’s Airports, which had been ordered under a Competition Commission ruling earlier this year, has been blocked after an appeal to the courts showed that the original ruling showed “apparent bias”.

The initial ruling in March of this year ordered BAA to sell off both Gatwick, Stansted and one of either Edinburgh or Glasgow Airport to break up the monopoly that BAA had on the UK’s Airports. BAA, who also own Heathrow, already sold Gatwick Airport earlier this year for over £1.5bn and have put other potential sales on hold until the issue is resolved.

The key point of the appeal was whether the inclusion of Professor Peter Moizer on the commission panel created bias as he was also advising one of the key players in the purchase of Gatwick at the same time. After careful deliberation the Competition Appeal Tribunal concluded “with the greatest reluctance” in favour of BAA.

With Sixt having car hire branches at both Heathrow Airport and Stansted Airport we are keen to keep an eye on any further developments from the case and hope that a decision regarding this is reached quickly.

Premier Inn has revealed that it is opening four new hotels at three of the city’s travel hubs.

The £125 million agreement with Arora Family Trust will see complexes at the Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick airports being built.

These will result in an additional 1,570 bedrooms becoming available for users of London car hire flying into the city.

Mark Anderson, commercial and property director for Whitbread, the owner of Premier Inn, said: “The success of the budget airlines has shown that there is an increasing demand for low-cost travel and that includes accommodation.”

In other news which could interest users of London car hire, ASDA recently revealed that it is cutting two pence from the price of its fuel.

This means that consumers filling up at the supermarket will pay no more than 102.9 and 103.9 for a litre of petrol and diesel respectively.

Book car hire at Heathrow Airport, Stansted Airport and Gatwick Airport from Sixt.
