Day one is officially over at the 2011 World Travel Market, This year has seen over 47,000 industry participants, 5,053 exhibiting companies with 183 countries and regions being represented by 16,379 exhibiting personnel at the prestigious show! Here are a few photos from Day one!

Making or receiving phone calls whilst abroad can be quite costly, and if you are a frequent traveller it can become a bit of a pain. Public Sector Strike

In light of tomorrows public sector strike Sixt would like to reassure customers that reservations will be honoured for any customers delayed due to the strike action.

The strike is set to cause disruption to airports tomorrow with hundreds of immigration and customs officers set to join the public sector strike.

Therefore if you have a reservation at any of our UK airport locations on Thursday 30th June and are delayed due to the public sector strike, we will hold your reservation and have a car ready for you when you have cleared security.

Disruption in London This Weekend

London residents and tourists alike are being warned to avoid Central London or take alternative routes, wherever possible, on Saturday the 26^th March as the TUC (Trade Unions Congress) will be staging their March For The Alternative.

The TUC’s March for the Alternative has two key aims, to give a national voice to all those affected by the cuts and to show that people reject the argument that there is no alternative.

There are plans for this to be a huge event, potentially up to 250,000 people, that will show just how much opposition there is to the government’s current programme. It is expected to bring together public service workers, those who depend on public services, those involved in national campaigns and those wishing to defend what is special in their own community. Further information on the march itself can be found on the March For The Alternative website.

The rally will begin to form at the Victoria embankment from 1100hrs this Saturday and the march is scheduled to start at 1200hrs. The march will go through key locations such as Whitehall, Trafalgar Square and Pall Mall in the following six hours with the event planned to end at 1800hrs at South Carriage Drive in Hyde Park.

The Metropolitan Police are warning that all roads on the route, plus all feeder roads and surrounding roads, may be closed if necessary to relieve congestion. Further information and maps of the road closures can be found online.

Fog causes flight disruption – Update

Once again this morning, adverse weather conditions in the UK are causing some disruption to flights.

Leeds Bradford Airport and London City Airport are advising passengers travelling this morning to contact their airline or tour operator to check the status of their flight before travelling to the airport.

As the adverse weather will affect road travel also, please allow extra time when travelling this morning. Travel news is being constantly updated on the BBC website where you can check the situation on UK motorways, main routes, rail and airports.

Eurostar Hit By Major Delays

As freezing temperatures return, bring many parts of Britain’s transport infrastructure to a standstill, St Pancras Eurostar terminal has found itself overwhelmed with passengers trying to reach their destinations and the station is struggling to cope.

Huge numbers where lining up today in the hope of getting on a train and queues of over 2km in length had formed at one point with many passengers waiting well in excess of 5 hours in freezing outdoor temperatures. Before 2pm new arrivals were being told that the queue had been closed and that they must leave.

Eurostar once again also came under some criticism for poor communication with many of those waiting saying that staff were not particularly forthcoming with updates on the current situation.

Sixt Wins Outstanding Customer Service Award

It has been quite a year for Sixt when it comes to awards. Having recently won the award for worlds leading marketing innovators and a World Travel Market award for best stand personnel We are delighted to round off the year winning a BT Visit London award for outstanding customer service.

Sixt UK were given a Silver award in this category which “recognises an individual or team who have demonstrated exceptional customer care and serve as an example to their industry peers.”

The ceremony in London was attended last night by our Customer Service Manager, Gary Coughlan, Senior Agent International Correspondence, Sabine Blasig and Finance Director Wai-Yan Fung who were extremely proud to receive this recognition of the dedication that Sixt holds towards excellent Customer Service.

We would also like to congratulate Renaissance London Chancery Court Hotel who won Gold in the category and InterContinental London Park Lane who took the Bronze.

Manchester Airport Notes Passenger Increase

It has been revealed that after almost two and a half years Manchester Airport is seeing a rise in its passenger numbers. With a number of popular routes to Singapore, the USA, and the Middle East boosting traveller numbers, October saw an increase of 1.81per cent in passengers, the first rise since May 2008.

Fantastic news for the airport, the consequences of such data are positive for all concerned. With higher popularity, airlines and services are far more likely to be willing to commit themselves to the port. Cheap car hire in Manchester facilities will offer those visitors to the region the perfect way to explore and discover the area, whilst an increasing number of flights to popular business and holiday hotspots will allow local residents fast and easy access to destinations around the world.

In particular, services to Dubai have attracted much attention, with Emirates noting record breaking passenger numbers to the UAE destination. Meanwhile, with Etihad Airways increasing their capacity to Abu Dhabi, passenger numbers to the Middle East have rocketed. And with Singapore Airlines also adding new flights to their routes, Manchester airport has noted a significant upsurge in traffic.

Talking of the welcome news, Manchester Airport’s managing director, Andrew Harrison, explained “we’re now starting to see strong passenger growth with international traffic showing a significant improvement on last year’s statistics. I am delighted to see that the market has finally taken a significant surge forward.” And with Christmas breaks increasingly popular, the airport’s popularity is set to continue soaring.

Sixt Win Best Stand Personnel Award At WTM 2010

We are only partly into the third day of the 2010 World Travel Market and it has already been a great year at the show for Sixt.

Having won a number of travel related awards over the past few weeks, we were delighted to be informed yesterday that we have won the award for best stand personnel.

There are a number of exhibitor awards given out each year and on the first day of the show, a panel of judges walk around the exhibition and grade the stands based on various criteria. Other awards up for grabs this year included best stand design, best feature and best stand for doing business on.

As a company who pride ourselves on excellent customer interaction, it was especially gratifying to win the personnel award and, having worked on the stand myself, I can testify that it was well earned and the whole team are doing a fantastic job!

The criteria upon which this particular award is based are as follows:

■ Cohesion in approach from all team members

■ Attentive and enthusiastic staff

■ Good knowledge of product/services being promoted

■ Good face-to-face contact with visitors

■ Encouragement onto the stand, with staff engaging with passing traffic

■ Polite and well-presented staff
