winter travel insurance Car hire users unsure over winter sports coverMany Britons heading abroad on winter sports trips do not realise that they may be covered on a traditional travel insurance policy, an expert has said.

Many holidaymakers do not realise that a normal insurance policy covers them for winter sports, it has been suggested.

Mark Mason, senior design manager for InsureandGo, said that a large number of people, such as users of car hire in France, believe that a separate policy is required for trips involving activities such as skiing.

However, he also commented that those failing to take out any cover before heading abroad for a winter sports break could leave themselves open to financial troubles, should any mishaps occur.

He explained: “Basically, they will not be covered. So if they are skiing and they break a leg or ankle, they will have to pay for everything themselves because they are not covered by insurance.”

Elsewhere, Tim Holmes, show manager of the Metro Ski & Snowboard Show, has said that ski and snowboarding breaks are unlikely to be too badly affected by the economic downturn, as people have a passion for these activities.
