One of the highlights of the 2007 festival: photograph by Rene Steiner

The International Tree and Light Festival in Geneva has been held in the city every year since 2001, featuring work from 10 European artists. The idea is simple, artists are allowed to decorate trees througout Geneva using lighting effects and their artistic flair to convey their message or simply to add beauty to the prominent positions selected for the festival.

The event runs from the 27th of November 2009 until the 2nd of January and has provided many highlights for locals and tourists in the city for the last 8 years. One of the exhibitions from 2007 showed suspended human sculptures made from chicken wire and lit brightly with white light.

The exhibition pieces are arranged along the banks of the Rhone river at the bottom end of Lake Geneva and form part of a trail for people to follow and take a journey through the artist’s displays. This year’s event features artists from France, Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

If you would like to learn more about the festival, then the official french language site is www.festivalarbresetlumieres.ch. It has a fantastic gallery and a map of the routes around the displays.

If you are planning on staying in Geneva or the surrounding area and are looking for vehicle hire then take advantage of booking with our Geneva Airport car hire branch so that you can get your car and suitcases in the same location.
