Why New Caledonia – the touristic highlights
New Caledonia offers an endless variety of landscapes, ranging from some of the world’s best white sandy beaches to spectacular mountain retreats. Surrounded by a 1,600 km long coral reef, it also offers the largest lagoon in the world. No wonder the island is called France’s showcase in the region.

Visitors can choose from uncountable activities – both on land, as well as on and under the water:

  • golf , tennis, bicycle or horse riding
  • hiking and mountain climbing
  • canoeing or canyoning
  • sightseeing in a helicopter or during a 4×4 adventure.
  • swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving
  • wind surfing, kite surfing, water skiing or jet skiing
  • sailing in a modern yacht or a native outrigger
  • deep-sea or big game fishing in a motor cruiser or whale watching
  • … and in the evenings, enjoying world-renowned French cuisine besides delicious fresh tropical fruits and seafood, viewing the sun set in front of a palm thatched bungalow

Where to find – geographical information
New Caledonia is situated in the heart South Pacific Ocean, approximately 1,200 km east of Australia and 1,500 km northwest of New Zealand. The charming archipelago consists of a main island, the Grande Terre, and several smaller islands. Grande Terre has a mountain range that runs the length of the island, with five peaks over 1,500 m. The total area of New Caledonia is 19,060 km2, 18,575 km2 of those being land.

Good to know – useful basics
The island’s name New Caledonia (or French officially: Nouvelle-Calédonie) is a synonym for Scotland and derives from Captain Cook, the terrain’s discoverer in 1774, who was reminded of his home when viewing the rugged coastline for the first time. Frequent visitors call the island more colloquial “le Caillou” which means stone or pebble, while the indigenous themselves prefer “la Kanaky”, a Hawaiian expression standing for person or people. New Caledonia was made a French possession in late 1853 and still is today. The population is estimated to be ca. 244,000. Nouméa, a garden city, where urbanization and nature blend harmoniously, represents the attractive and modern capital of the territory. The currency is the CFP Franc. French is the official language of New Caledonia.

When traveling best – the climate
The climate of the archipelago is tropical with seasonal rainfall. The climatic year is dived into two main seasons: a dry season, and a warm and wet season. The dry cooler months are from April to November with daily temperature ranging from 17-27 °C. During the wet season (December to March) the temperature can reach 32 °C. Refreshment comes from mild winds which temper the heat, and evenings are pleasantly cool.

How to explore – the island’s transportation system
New Caledonia can be reached via 25 (!) airports and 6 heliports. Driving around on the island is comfortable as the terrain has been made accessible via 5,562 km of highways. The complete road network is very good and you drive the European way, with left hand drive.
