expensive rail travel UK rail prices are crazyA transport expert has described parts of rail travel as “crazy” and “a nightmare”, shortly after the UK’s first four-figure rail fare was revealed.

Some rail fares around the UK are “crazy”, an expert has said.

Phil Withrington, director of Transport Watch, made this comment in reaction to news that Britain’s first four-figure train fare has been reached.

It now costs £1,002 to travel from Newquay to Kyle of Lochlash, which could encourage people to instead opt for car hire.

Mr Withrington said: “It’s crazy. But more importantly it would be sensible to address the extraordinarily high fares between the north and the south of the country.”

He noted that the cost of a return ticket from Northampton to London is £50, which may mean consumers could be better off booking a hire car rather than relying on public transport.

Catt Hobbs, public transport campaigner for Campaign for Better Transport, recently confirmed that the price of travel between Newquay and Kyle Lochlash is £1,002 for an on-the-day booking.
