The US embassy could be turned into a luxury London hotel.

A Qatari developer has purchased the Mayfair building, which is situated on Grosvenor Square.

It is thought that the group is planning to turn the embassy into a mixed-use site, which could include a luxury hotel and residential area, giving car hire users an extra accommodation option in the capital.

This comes after the sale of the building was agreed earlier this week, although details of cost have not been revealed.

The US embassy is set to move to a new development in the capital.

A statement from the US State Department said: “With the signing of this contract the United States takes another step towards relocating to a new state-of-the-art embassy which will enhance the urban fabric of London and demonstrate exceptional American architecture.”

Work on the new development is not expected to begin until 2012 or 2013, with a projected completion date of 2016 or 2017.
