Step in and select your destination

I’m sure that at some point most drivers have thought about the prospect of a car that drives itself. I know I certainly have, but it’s usually followed by a quick realisation that it probably won’t happen in my lifetime or at least not whilst I’m old enough to care.

Well it now appears that I am wrong, as a driver free taxi service is set to begin operating at London’s Heathrow Airport as early as 2010!

A new fleet of 21 electronic taxis’s will operate between Heathrow Terminal 5 and the business car park. Each shuttle can carry up to four passengers and is capable of travelling at 25mph using computers and laser guidance to navigate.

The system named The Personal Rapid Transport system claims to be environmentally friendly, comfortable and will help to reduce waiting time that passengers currently experience when using the airport shuttle bus operation.

Passengers will use a touch screen to choose from three destinations, with the longest journey from the car park to the airport taking just four minutes.

The shuttles have been designed and built in Britain by Advanced Transport Systems Ltd in conjunction with Bristol University.

It certainly sounds exciting but will you dare to travel in a car without a driver!
